When I was a kid, I looked forward to the Speech Competitions at school.

Let’s be honest – my dad wrote the speeches.  He loaded them full of gags and taught me about timing and delivery.  The feeling when a joke landed and the crowd laughed was unlike anything else I had experienced to that point.

Later, I fed myself a steady diet of Just for Laughs, Comedy at Club 54 and Evening at the Improv.  I’d memorize the jokes and test them out on my friends at school, craving the laughs and applause I saw on TV.

Years later, I started writing (and editing, rewriting, rehearsing and generally talking to myself), until I had crafted my first stand up set.  Without telling anyone, I booked a spot at an amateur showcase and never looked back.
